Issue #4: The Power of Being Uniquely You
Read Time: 4 minutes
In a world overflowing with distractions and options, blending in means being forgotten.
If you don’t stand out, you’re invisible.
But here’s the good news: your greatest strength is you.
Embrace your individuality, quirks, and all.
There’s no better time to be authentically you.
In this newsletter, I’m sharing my strategies for building your brand as a safety professional. This idea was sparked by a LinkedIn post I shared last week about critical thinking. Use this framework as you reflect on your career.
As safety professionals, we’re trained to develop safe systems of work and ensure hazards are understood, assessed, and controlled. But in our quest for control, we often overlook our most valuable asset: our unique selves.
Who are you as a safety professional?
Do you thrive working on innovative solutions?
Do you bring an empathetic approach to employee safety and well-being?
Maybe you’re a data-driven analyst who finds patterns others miss.
Understanding who you are and what makes you unique is the first step in leveraging your individuality in your career.
Each of us has unique experiences, skills, and perspectives. For instance, my journey from industrial hygienist to a global strategic role gave me a unique vantage point (see my career journey here). This blend of high-level strategy and hands-on experience shapes my approach to safety leadership.
What: Your Personal Brand
What exactly is a personal brand, and why does it matter? Your personal brand is how you present yourself to the world and how others perceive you. It mixes your professional skills, personality, and the unique value you bring to your field.
For safety professionals, your personal brand could encompass your technical expertise, leadership style, and passion for creating safe, healthy, and productive work environments. It’s about showcasing your unique blend of skills and attributes in a way that sets you apart.
To build your brand, identify your core values and strengths.
What do you stand for?
What are you exceptionally good at?
If you excel at engaging with employees and fostering a safety culture, make that a central theme of your brand. For example, you might build high-performing teams and coach senior leaders on leading with safety.
Share stories and insights highlighting your strengths through LinkedIn posts, speaking engagements, or within your organization.
Where: Finding Your Platform
Where should you showcase your personal brand? It depends on your audience and where you can have the most impact. For safety professionals, LinkedIn is a powerful platform. It’s a space to share industry insights, connect with professionals, and establish yourself as a thought leader.
Consider participating in industry conferences and webinars, writing articles for industry publications, or starting a blog. These venues provide excellent opportunities to showcase your expertise and network with peers.
Think about where your voice can be heard and valued. Becoming known as a key person of influence has been instrumental in building my brand, allowing me to share my insights on a larger scale and connect with like-minded professionals.
When: Timing Your Efforts
When is the right time to start building your personal brand? The answer is now. There’s no better time than the present to showcase your unique strengths and build your reputation.
Be mindful of key moments in your career when amplifying your brand can be particularly impactful. When you achieve a significant milestone, consider sharing your success and the insights you gained (while being mindful of your employer’s non-disclosure and confidentiality requirements).
Consistency is key. Regularly sharing your knowledge and experiences helps keep your personal brand top of mind. Find a rhythm that works for you, whether it’s a weekly LinkedIn post, a monthly article, or quarterly speaking engagements.
Why: The Importance of Authenticity
Why is embracing your uniqueness and building a personal brand important? Authenticity can be a game-changer in the safety profession. When you’re true to yourself, you resonate with others and build trust.
Being authentic also means embracing your imperfections. No one is perfect, and our quirks often lead to the most innovative solutions. You create a more relatable and inspiring narrative by being open about your journey, including the challenges and setbacks.
I’ve shared my experiences navigating a complex career across multiple countries and industries and the lessons I’ve learned from successes and failures. This transparency not only builds credibility but also encourages others to approach their challenges with confidence and resilience.
How: Building and Sustaining Your Brand
Here are some practical steps to build and sustain your personal brand:
1. Self-Assessment and Reflection
Start with a self-assessment. Reflect on your career journey, achievements, and lessons learned. Identify the unique skills and qualities that set you apart. Tools like SWOT analysis (assessing your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) can be helpful.
2. Define Your Brand Statement
Craft a clear and concise brand statement. This should encapsulate who you are, what you do, and the value you bring. For example, my mission is “To positively impact a billion lives by helping safety leaders and companies improve the working lives of their employees.”
3. Create and Share Content
Create content that reflects your brand. This could be blog posts, articles, LinkedIn updates, or videos. Share your insights, experiences, and knowledge. Use storytelling to make your content engaging and relatable.
4. Engage with Your Community
Building a brand is not just about broadcasting your message. It’s also about engaging with your community. Respond to comments, participate in discussions, and support your peers. Building relationships is a crucial part of personal branding.
5. Seek Feedback and Adjust
Personal branding is an ongoing process. Seek feedback from peers, mentors, and your audience. Use this feedback to refine and adjust your brand. Stay open to learning and evolving.
6. Be Consistent
Consistency is key to sustaining your brand. Regularly share content and engage with your audience. Consistency helps build recognition and trust over time.
7. Stay Authentic
Above all, stay true to yourself. Authenticity is the cornerstone of a strong personal brand. Share your genuine experiences and perspectives. People connect with authenticity.
So, there you have it: how to use a critical thinking framework to build your brand.
Remember, your uniqueness is your superpower.
Embrace who you are, leverage your unique strengths, and build a personal brand that reflects your true self.
Until next week,
Megan
