From Drift to Design: Build the Career You Deserve

The Brilliant Careers Collective

Hi Reader,

Every decision we make – every project we take on, every conversation we have – is another brick in the foundation of our career. But here’s the big question:

Are you building the career you want, or just adding bricks because you feel you should?

From Drift to Design

I’ve been there – caught up in the momentum of doing more, achieving more, pushing harder. But at some point, I realized that while I was building something, it wasn’t aligned with who I’d become or what truly mattered to me.

Purpose-driven leadership means moving from drift to design – getting clear on what you value and intentionally shaping a career that reflects it.

This week, I explored this idea in my latest LinkedIn posts. Check them out here:

A Quick Exercise for Alignment

Here’s something simple you can do this week:

  1. Pause and Reflect: List three priorities you’re working on.
  2. Ask the Right Questions: For each one, ask yourself:

    • Does this align with what I value most?
    • Is this moving me toward the career I want?
    • Does it feel meaningful?
  3. Adjust: Identify one thing to say no to or lean into that feels more aligned with your purpose.

Even small shifts can lead to big changes when they’re done with intention.

What’s Inspiring Me

Building a meaningful career takes clarity, focus, and the right tools. This week, I’ve been inspired by these resources:

  1. Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett & Dave Evans
A practical guide to using design thinking to create a career (and life) you love.
  2. The Bullet Journal Method by Ryder Carroll
A fantastic tool for reflection, organization, and progress tracking.
  3. Radical Candor by Kim Scott
Essential reading for leaders looking to balance results with relationships.

I’m also creating a curated Amazon shop with resources to help purpose-driven leaders thrive. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the categories I’m working on:

  • Books for Career Growth
  • Leadership Development Tools
  • Mindset and Reflection Resources
  • Work-Life Alignment Essentials

Would a collection like this be helpful for you? Let me know – I’d love your input as I finalize the shop.
